The small island of New Guinea lies just north of Australia, almost directly on the equator. The country of Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of this island, while the other half is known as Irian Jaya, part of Indonesia. A river called "Wahgi River" carves a fifty-mile long valley between four thousand meter high mountains producing a wonderful environment for growing coffee. Plantations were established in this rugged area in the 1950's and 1960's, using seedstock from the fabled Blue Mountain region of Jamaica. The Estate is in New Guinea's West Highlands, in a cloud forest over a mile high. Sweet-toned, delicate aroma with butter notes and hints of chocolate and Mediterranean spice. Even sweeter in the cup, still delicate but rich, softly acidy and quietly complex with distinct floral notes and a crisp, subtle fruit that suggests Riesling table wine or perhaps black currant. The fruit notes turn toward cocoa in the long, continuing sweet finish.
