Operation Smile is the not-for-profit, volunteer medical services organization that provides reconstructive facial surgery to indigent children and young adults in 16 developing countries and in the United States. Based in Norfolk, Va., Operation Smile provides education and training to physicians and other health care professionals to achieve long-term self-sufficiency. Since 1982, Operation Smile has treated 45,000 children here and abroad, with one cleft lip surgery costing approximately $750.
Operation Smile was the recipient of the 1996 $1 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize for its efforts to alleviate human suffering.
